Teen Driving

The Elk Grove Police Department recently made a presentation on teen illegal street racing/unsafe driving in our community.  Discuss (means more than one sentence) your ideas about this topic as follows:

  1. Do you always wear a seat belt?  Why or why not?
  2. Do you have friends that drive too fast? If not have you witnessed teens driving too fast or unsafely?
  3. What are your concerns with teens driving too fast?
  4. What can you do if you’re riding in a car where a friend or family member starts racing or driving unsafely?

I always wear a seatbelt, because if you don’t, not only will you get a ticket, but if you get into a car crash you will die and just because its common sense to if you value your life. I also wear a seatbelt, because its there, I’m pretty sure that if cars were made without seatbelts it’s for a reason that you don’t need one, but because they are made with one you should use what you have.

I do have friends that drive too fast and I always tell them to slow down and if they refuse I’ll tell them to pull over and let me out the car and I’ll get a ride elsewhere, because not only are they driving fast, but I see teenagers and adults driving fast and very poor also, but what can you do.

My main concern for teenagers driving to fast is big, because I don’t want anyone I love and care about on the road with them or myself. Hearing about parents and families just torn after hearing their only son or daughter or just their child killed in some car crash that could have totally been avoided. I couldn’t imagine getting a phone call late at night or whatever time of day saying someone that means the world to me was killed in some car crash. My heart goes out to the families and friends who lost a loved one and I just pray I never have to experience that terrible feeling or loss.

So, when I’m in a situation with a family member or friend driving to fast I’ll tell them to pull over and let me out if telling them to slow down doesn’t work and just altogether avoid driving with them, because some people learn the hard way if not at all.

I previously did not always wear a seatbelt when driving, and it was mainly because I would just forget to or I’d just not put it on. After the presentation I now always wear my seatbelt and make sure everyone in the car is, because the presentation brought to realization that just because you think it won’t happen to you or it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean that it won’t.

I have many friends and relatives that primarily drive way over the speed limit. A lot of times it’s because of them running late or trying to beat the light or rush hour traffic; whatever the reason is I know now its not a good enough one. The presentation made me think to tell my friends and relatives to be safe drivers and just take the extra time to be a safe driver and always wear a seatbelt.

My concerns with teens driving too fast are that most teens don’t understand that they have a lot to learn. Just like how most of my friends think they know it all and that includes driving. But, after I told them what could happen to even the most experienced driver’s, they realized their non-experience and do drive safer.

Some things that I can do while riding in a car with someone who starts racing or driving unsafely is, first make sure everyone is wearing there seatbelt. Then, tell the driver that they need to either let me out of the car or they can stop messing around while driving and be mindful of the speed laws; because the have to take into consideration that my life is in their hands.
